How to Embed SmugMug Photos into WordPress Blog Posts

I get asked this question a lot1… so it’s becoming a blog post.

Here’s how to insert a photo from SmugMug into a WordPress blog post:

  1. Browse to the SmugMug gallery and photo that you’d like to use.
  2. Above the photo, click the Share button, then Get a Link
SmugMug Sharing to WordPress - Get a Link
  3. Click the Embeddable Links tab, then choose which size image you want and click the Copy button to the right of the code.

  4. Paste that code into your WordPress blog post in the HTML editor – if you paste into the Visual editor it’ll likely muck things up.
  5. There is no step 5.

  1. Likely because I keep pimping SmugMug and WordPress. That’s a SmugMug referral link – if you use it you’ll save $5 off a new account and I’ll get a few dollars of SmugMug credit as well. Win-win, as they say.

they should give you credit for those of us with existing accounts just because you help justify staying with them. :D

ok. one note. you need to be in ‘Text’ view in WordPress for this to work. which..you want to do at the end after all your text is written in Visual if you’re going to use that view it all; as I understand WP will break it if you go back and forth. I’m new to using the WP WYSIWYG, so please correct me if I’m wrong.

    • Aw crap, forgot about the Visual editor since I never use it. You’re right, it would probably screw up the pasted code. I’ll do a bit of investigation and update my article here.

it was a fascinating experiment for me. the Visual Vs Text was really a ‘doh’ moment for me and I should know better, but just in case someone doesn’t have any experience, it might help. I think the WP interface for uploading photos is better in my case than linking from SmugMug, but it’s a great option for someone who’d want to drive traffic to their SmugMug portfolio and doesn’t mind tweaking the code more than I want to get into at this point in my evolution.

Thank you so much for doing my homework for me. :D

  4. Hi this might sound really obvious – but I’m really a tech noob so bear with me! – embedding photos from Smug Mug into WordPress means that I don’t use up the photo storage space on WordPress right? So it means I can include an unlimited number of photos (provided I have a SmugMug account) onto WordPress without having to pay for the additional wordpress storage upgrade?

    Thanks for your tutorials!

    • That’s correct – the photos will be loaded via SmugMug (and shown on your blog) but they won’t take up any storage space or bandwidth from your WordPress hosting.
